About the Author

HELEN JOHNSTON is Lecturer in Criminology at the University of Hull, UK. Her research interests lie in the history of prisons and imprisonment, especially local imprisonment, prison architecture and prison staff in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. She is co-editor of Prison Readings: A Critical Introduction to Prison and Imprisonment.
